RESIDENTS in Cledford can request an election to replace two town councillors who resigned this month – but coronavirus means it would not take place until May 2021.

Middlewich Town Council has formally declared two vacancies in the ward, following the resignation of Russell and Helen Watkinson.

It means that voters have until Thursday, June 18, to write to Cheshire East Council's returning officer should they wish to request a by-election.

Normally, the poll would take place within 60 days of a council vacancy in the event that one is requested.

However, Government legislation set earlier in the pandemic postponed all votes to May 2021.

That included the election of Cheshire's police and crime commissioner, which was supposed to take place this month.

If no notice is given for a by-election to take place, new members will be co-opted onto Middlewich Town Council.

This is how Cllr Graham Orme replaced Rachel Pendleton, who stepped down last autumn.
