VISITORS to beauty spots across Wirral are urged to act responsibly with their rubbish at this time after pictures showing overflowing bins were taken by a reader during daily exercise.

The pictures, taken during a daily afternoon walk along Leasowe Embankment, show 'vastly overflowing bins' at the end of the car park and also at the top of the path to the Embankment (next to the Life Guard hut).

Also pictured are overflowing bins on the embankment wall towards Leasowe Bay, as well as Moreton Beach Car Park and also the car park at The Gunsite.

The rubbish was taken away by Biffa on the due collection date.

The pictures were forwarded to Wirral Council for comment. A spokesperson said: "More than ever, when staffing levels are already stretched and there is a backlog of work for the staff who are able to be on duty, we need people to act responsibly with their rubbish."

The anonymous reader told the Globe: "I was amazed, disgusted and annoyed" by the sight, adding: "I fully understand that at the moment services are stretched, this is certainly not acceptable by anybody's standards.

"People are now allowed to travel a reasonable distance to take exercise and the disgusting sight of the bins and surrounding areas, will be off putting to the majority of Wirral visitors - this litter is truly a bad advert for Wirral tourism and the way we treat our environment.

"On an environmental note, this is an area of outstanding natural beauty and wildlife.

"The litter is being blown into the sea and sand dunes jeopardising our bird life, sea life and wild life enormously.

"We have a Bank Holiday weekend on our doorstep, what will visitors think of Wirral.

"I'll tell you what they will think: "I'm not coming back here, it's a rubbish tip".

"This is a breeding ground for Covid 19."

The council spokesperson continued: "More than ever, when staffing levels are already stretched and there is a backlog of work for the staff who are able to be on duty, we need people to act responsibly with their rubbish.

"If a bin is full, please take it to the next one and see if it will fit in there.

"If it doesn't, then please take it home with you and put it in your bin there.

"Leaving it behind is not acceptable, not even next to a full bin.

"Our staff are absolutely committed to keeping Wirral looking great and in normal times are able to keep on top of this work, even at the busiest times.

"But these are not normal times and while it is good that people can spend more time outdoors, there are still strict controls around things like social distancing in place so it is important for people to remember that and be aware that Wirral is not currently encouraging visitors to the area.

"We are still in the middle of an unprecedented health pandemic and it is vital that everyone plays their part and takes personal responsibility."
