RUDHEATH teenager Kian Carmichael saddled up for a marathon cycle challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The Year 8 pupil at Rudheath Senior Academy pupil, who has lost loved ones to the disease, wanted to help after reading about the catastrophic effect of Covid-19 on UK charities, with the cancellation of thousands of events, including the London Marathon, proving costly.

Kian’s sponsored 26-mile ride took him round Northwich, Winsford, Cuddington and Delamere.

Keyworker mum, Sarah Whalley, has secured match funding from her employer, Morrisons, bringing the total to more than £500.

Kian said: “I wanted to raise money for Cancer Research UK by completing a 26-mile cycle ride simply because I know a lot of people, including members of my family that have encountered this awful disease, and I would like to help beat cancer sooner.

“All charities have been hit very hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of fundraising events have been cancelled and many charities are struggling to maintain services because this huge reduction in income.

“This impacts all sectors of society from children to the elderly as well as the vital work in areas such as palliative care, serious diseases, mental health, housing support, food supplies and countless others that charities.

“If you can make a donation, no matter how big or small it will be massively appreciated.”

Jemma Morrell, teacher at Rudheath Senior Academy, said: “I speak for everyone when I say that we are all so proud of his fantastic achievement.

“I know Kian has been humbled and is grateful for the support he has received.

“It is also fantastic to see that Morrisons, where his mother has been working in these difficult times, have kindly offered to show their support by doubling the money Kian has made!”
