HEALTH bosses have launched a recruitment drive for members of the public to volunteer at its hospitals as the fight against coronavirus continues.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital said our readers have the chance to make a real difference by helping NHS staff who are preparing for the busy coming weeks amid the wider COVID-19 pandemic.

A spokesperson said: "Many of the volunteers at Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals, who are older members of the community, are now self-isolating.

"This means there is a greater need than ever for more volunteers to assist in day-to-day activities to keep the hospital running smoothly.

"It also means NHS staff are more available to carry out frontline duties caring for patients.

"The Trust is calling for help at its hospitals from those who want to offer valuable support at this time and who are not part of the 'at-risk' group.

"Details of those classed as higher risk and who cannot be considered for volunteering are listed on the Public Health England website."

Volunteer roles include assisting with administrative duties on wards, supporting the teams in handling concerns from the public, greeting people while offering hand hygiene advice, directing the public to areas of the hospitals and many more.

Helen Marks, director of workforce at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, said: "Volunteers are more important to us than ever as we prepare for the busy months ahead and the higher demand on our NHS services.

"We have many volunteering roles at our hospitals and not only is this a way of supporting the NHS staff at such a crucial time but this can also be a great way of enhancing and developing many different skills.

"Volunteers will be well supported and will also be offered training where required."
