A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a serious assault in Sankey Bridges this morning.
The 35-year-old victim, from Widnes, suffered serious injuries to his head after he was attacked with a meat cleaver on Old Liverpool Road at around 11.15am today, Saturday.
He later attended hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
A 42-year-old man, from Warrington, has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
The suspect remains in custody this evening, with Cheshire Police’s investigations ongoing.
Old Liverpool Road was closed for several hours in the aftermath of the incident near to the Coach and Horses pub.
A force spokesman said: “At 11.15am on Saturday, March 21, police were called to reports of a 35-year-old man being assaulted with a weapon on Old Liverpool Road.
“The victim, from Widnes, received serious injuries to his head.
“He presented himself at hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
“A 42-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is in police custody for questioning.
“The investigation is in its early stages and enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what has taken place.”
