AN inquiry into Middlewich Cemetery, launched following allegations made on Facebook, has closed with no serious findings.

Middlewich Town Council opened the inquiry last June – inviting residents with any information to submit it via email.

The findings would have been passed onto the Ministry of Justice for further investigation if it was merited.

But after closing the email account, the council has confirmed only one serious allegation was submitted, and this was later withdrawn by the complainant.

Cllr Mike Hunter said: “Our promise to residents was that we would forward any concerns we received to the relevant authority.

Northwich Guardian:

“For example, if an issue was deemed to be serious enough, then we would notify the Ministry of Justice, which oversees cemetery boards in the UK.

“The majority of emails we received were in relation to the general maintenance of Middlewich Cemetery, and we will therefore send the contents of these to the Middlewich Cemetery Committee, which is the relevant authority in this case.

“One other complaint was subsequently withdrawn by the complainant.

“As councillors, residents and bereaved relatives, we now consider our investigation closed.”

Town councillors launched the inquiry last June in an attempt to get to the bottom of allegations made about the cemetery since 2016.

No details of what the original allegations involve have been discussed publicly.

At the meeting where the inquiry was launched last June, five residents submitted questions to the council about the cemetery over ‘terrible things’ reported on social media.

In her question, Pat Woods said: “There are a lot of concerns and very disturbing factors that have been brought to a lot of Middlewich people’s attention.

“We want to bury our loved ones at peace in our own cemetery – at the moment this is in question.”
