EFFORTS to prevent homelessness in Cheshire West are to be stepped up as part of a new five-year plan to tackle the issue.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s cabinet approved the new homelessness strategy for 2020 to 2025 at last week's meeting.

It sets out five key priorities that aim to support people at risk of homelessness and ensure there is suitable accommodation available for everyone.

Cllr Richard Beacham, cabinet member for housing, regeneration and growth, said: "The people that we see on the streets are mostly just the tip of the iceberg.

“There are thousands more that will be vulnerably housed, just a short paycheque away from losing their house or already sofa-surfing.

“This is a very, very large issue and it is not just about what we see on the streets today, it is about much more than that.”

The council is aiming to prevent people falling into homelessness by promoting early intervention, working with both social and private landlords and giving specialist training for staff.

It wants to increase the availability of housing by using more empty homes, developing shared housing and spare room options, and considering modular homes as an alternative solution.

CWAC also wants to support rough sleepers and those with complex needs, reduce the demand for temporary accommodation and the use of bed and breakfasts, and work with other public sector and voluntary groups to tackle homelessness.

Cllr Margaret Parker, leader of CWAC’s Conservative opposition, said: “I and the Conservative group fully support the adoption of the strategy and action plan going forward.

“It will be of invaluable help to our homeless and rough sleepers.”
