WILTSHIRE Council disclosed today (Feb 24) that it has scrapped Sunday parking charges in all council-operated car parks to support local businesses and communities.

The decision will also affect all on-street pay and display bays throughout the entire county.

Sunday charges had previously been suspended for two years in all car parks and on-street pay and display bays.

As this period was a success, the council has decided to keep parking free for one day a week.

Cllr Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for highways, transport and waste, said: “This represents a significant investment in our communities and local businesses.

"It will benefit shoppers and visitors who want to use our car parks and on-street pay and display bays for free.

"We hope lots of people will take advantage of this scheme."

Cllr Weyman said the move would enable people to park for free on one day a week and to get out and explore the county.

She added: “Free parking on Sundays is just one of a range of schemes we operate; we work with town and parish councils to provide free parking for local events, and also partner with some local communities who fund their own arrangements, including first and second hour free and parking redemption schemes."

Signs will be placed up in every car park and on-street pay and display bays advising of the decision to ensure people and businesses know about this positive news for their local communities.
