BLUES sank poor St Helens in style to set up a trip to Trafford.

They had more power than Town could handle, running up six goals in an hour to storm through to the next round thanks to strike pair Phil Mason and Les Miranda.

The duo inflicted most of the damage.

As early as the third minute Miranda set up fellow front runner Mason but his effort drifted just wide.

Three minutes later the inevitable happened and, following John Bluck's initial approach play, Mason's whose first-time pass found Miranda who made no mistake from close range.

The next goal came via the penalty spot when Ross Kennedy was brought down on the edge of the area, Mason stepping up to smash the ball high into the net.

The first real threat on the Winsford goal came on 19 minutes when the Vodkat North West Counties League Divison One Player of the Month Rob Whyte collected the ball on the left before firing inches wide of Michael Langley's far post.

The hosts continued to press but they had to wait until injury time to add another goal.

Mason's speculative shot had been tipped around the post by Saints goalkeeper Graeme McCall but the resulting corner saw Mischa Showers drill home from the edge of the box following a poor clearance.

Karl Ledsham pulled a goal back three minutes after the break, sending a swerving shot past Langley that left home supporters wondering if the visitors were going to launch an unlikely comeback.

They need not have worried.

Two minutes later Miranda's perfect centre was headed home by Showers.

Mason and Miranda combined again on 55 minutes when the former broke clear of the defence and unselfishly laid the ball on for his strike partner to slide the ball under the advancing McCall.

The scoring was completed on 64 minutes when Mason once again broke clear but this time he rounded McCall to complete the job himself.
