A DECISION by a Barnton salon to stop supplying gossip magazines has been praised by customers.

Oliver Gibney, who runs a hairdressing and hair extensions salon on Runcorn Road, made the decision in the wake of the tragic death of former Love Island host Caroline Flack.

The TV presenter sadly took her own life last weekend after being hounded by celebrity gossip magazines and mainstream media for a sustained period.

Hair salons across the country have since united by ditching such magazines, and Oliver says that his decision has been backed fully by his customers.

“I decided to stop providing gossip magazines following the recent tragic events involving Caroline Flack,” he said.

“They are not something I want to see in my salon.

“A number of other businesses have decided to do it now, which is great to see.

“I want people who come into my salon to have a positive experience throughout, and that’s why we are no longer stocking those type of magazines.

“The reaction we have received from customers has been amazing, and everyone I have spoken to has been supportive of it and got on board.”

Oliver went on to say: “You see people being targeted all the time. In the past few weeks, it’s been Phillip Schofield, Katie Price - the list goes on.

“I’m sick of seeing it and hearing about it.

“We’re all human at the end of the day, so to see that someone has reached the level of depression and desperation that Caroline must have got to is awful.

“This didn’t happen as much years ago when you used to buy the paper and it was gone by the end of the day, but now with social media, you see the stories being shared again and again day after day.

“It’s putting people in an early grave."
