BRADFORD is one of the most expensive places to insure a car in the UK, outside of London - featuring in the top 10 in a new study.

The average premium in Bradford last year was £1,091.96 a year, which is £622.10 more than the cheapest place of Caradon in Cornwall, where insurance premiums were just £469.86. Bradford is the fifth highest place in the UK.

CompareTheMarket reveals all in its latest campaign - Premium Drivers - which analyses car insurance quotes in the UK by region, driver age, and car value, to pull together the league table from 409 of the UK’s local authorities.

Here are the other most expensive council areas for car insurance in the UK and their annual premiums: 1 Manchester - £1,260.24; 2 Birmingham - £1,173.50; 3 Luton - £1,165.91; 4 Blackburn with Darwen - £1,108.65; 5 Bradford - £1,091.96; 6 Sandwell - £1,060.72; 7 Slough - £1,048.40; 8 Oldham - £1,048.08; 9 Liverpool - £1,044.99; 10 Leicester - £1,036.79.

Meanwhile, here are the top 10 cheapest council areas or local authorities for car insurance: 1 Caradon (Cornwall); 2 West Devon; 3 South Hams (Devon); 4 East Devon; 5 West Somerset; 6 North Devon; 7 North Norfolk; 8 Teignbridge (Devon); 9 Scottish Borders; 10 Stroud.

It’s perhaps not surprising that less experienced drivers are more likely to be at risk of accidents and therefore have higher premiums. New drivers aged 17-20 can expect to pay an average of £1,464.75.

Premiums steadily decrease as you get older before bottoming out for ages 65-79 at £330.48 per year on average. A whopping annual difference of £1,134.27. Premiums then pick up again for drivers aged 80+, with a £167.75 increase to an average of £498.23.
