A train was left stranded for hours in Winsford today after Storm Ciara broke overhead cables.
The Avanti service from Preston to Birmingham ran into trouble around midday and grinded to halt after encountering tangled wires caused by the adverse weather conditions.
It is understood that passengers were stuck on the train for over three hours before finally boarding another train that was sent to rescue them on the other line.
The rescue train then took passengers to Crewe station where they were disembarked.
Network Rail advised via Twitter that a second train also halted in Winsford was an Avanti service running from Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston.
Avanti West Coast have confirmed that the trains have now been moved.
