A FLOOD warning has been issued for the Mersey in Warrington.

The warning is in place in the area around Arpley Bridge and Chester Road today, Sunday, as a result of an expected tidal surge and high winds from Storm Ciara.

Flooding is ‘expected’ on low-lying land, with high tides expected between 12.15pm and 1.15pm.

A government spokesman said: “The high tide on the morning of Sunday, February 9, is expected to be higher than usual at the Mersey Estuary at Arpley Bridge, as a result of surge and high winds from Storm Ciara.

“Consequently, flooding of low-lying land, roads and farmland is expected between 12.15pm and 1.15pm.

“Levels are expected to peak at 6.9m, and we believe there is a possibility of flooding for parts of Chester Road.

“Our incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels, and will issue further flood warnings if necessary.”

A wider flood alert has also been issued along parts of the river across town.

Areas where flooding is ‘possible’ include Latchford, Woolston, Penketh, Howley, Sankey Bridges, Paddington, Centre Park and Fiddlers Ferry.

High tides in these places are expected between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

The spokesman added: “Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses, be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation.”
