A SCHOOL closed due to concerns over its roof is hoping to open its doors to its students next week.

Benton Park School shut on Monday for this week due to "health and safety" concerns relating to the roof of its main teaching block.

In an update, it is hoped the Rawdon school will be re-opened next Tuesday (February 11), following a full assessment of the school roof by professionals next Monday.

Learning support surgery sessions for the school’s Year 11 and Year 12 students will be in place today.

Plans are also in place for the school’s year 11, 12 and 13 students to access taught lessons on Monday.

In an update letter from headteacher Delia Martin, published on the school’s website, she wrote: “In terms of whole school provision, we are exploring all options available to us should these be needed following the assessment on Monday.

“This is not a situation any of us would wish to find ourselves in and we fully acknowledge the anxiety, concern and disruption it has created.

“Our priorities remain the safety of students and staff whilst also being able to deliver the quality educational provision our students deserve.

“Clearly, the current weather forecast is causing some concern but we are hopeful that with the correct safety equipment in place the inspection will be able to go ahead as planned.

“We are hopeful that once the Authorities have a full assessment of the situation and a plan for the works required, they will allow us back onto the school site on Tuesday, February 11.

“However, regardless of this, ongoing work with Leeds City Council is still underway to secure some contingency arrangements, should they be required.”

Miss Martin also thanked parents and carers for their help and support during the ongoing closure of the school.
