INVESTIGATORS are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a pensioner was hit by an unmarked police car and killed.

The 80-year-old man was crossing Warrington Road in Penketh shortly after 7.15pm on Monday, February 3, when he was struck by a black BMW near to the Red Lion pub.

He was pronounced dead at the scene on the A562.

Cheshire Police referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct ‘in line with procedure’, with an investigation into the cause of the collision ongoing.

Investigators are now appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

An IOPC spokesman said: “The IOPC is appealing for witnesses following a road traffic incident in which a man died.

“The 80-year-old was hit by an unmarked Cheshire Constabulary car on Warrington Road, Penketh, just after 7.20pm on February 3.

“We are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact us via 0800 096 9078 or email warringtonroad@policeconduct.gov.uk.

Warrington Guardian:

“We have met with the man’s family to inform them of our investigation.

“Our thoughts remain with them, and all those affected by this incident.”

The IOPC previously confirmed that the police car was not attending an emergency incident at the time of the accident, which occurred in the Widnes-bound carriageway.

Its investigation team have been carrying out door to door enquiries in the Penketh area.

A huge emergency services presence attended the incident, with Warrington Road reopening late on Monday.
