WHEN Chris Grace and his pal, Ken Wysocki told regulars at the Beaumont Arms, Ladybridge, they’d grown a pumpkin the size if a barrel of ale, they just laughed.

But, as this photo from September 17, 1981, shows Chris, of Penarth Road, Bolton, and Ken, of Dove Walk, Farnworth, had the last laugh when they turned up at the pub with it, to the amazement of manageress Margaret Adams.

The pumpkin was grown by the two men on the allotment they shared in Bolton and was set to be used in a ‘guess the weight’ competition in aid of Bolton Dunkirk Veterans.

Our report states that it was put on display behind the bar for a fortnight.

Sadly we cannot confirm if it did in fact turn into a barrel of best bitter on the chime of midnight, but the Beaumont Arms remains a thriving pub to this day so maybe pop in ask.
