EXTREME sportsman Guy Wolstencroft has secured a place as one of the 20 amateur cyclists taking part in cycling’s ultimate event – the Tour de France 2020 challenge next summer.

Guy, from Knutsford, will join a team of cyclists aiming to raise £1 million for Cure Leukaemia, which will be led by Geoff Thomas, former England, Crystal Palace, Rochdale and Crewe Alexandra footballer and blood cancer survivor.

Guy will be self-funding his project, and has set a goal to raise £30,000 for the charity.

The team of riders, selected from more than 100 applicants, will cycle the full Tour de France route in 2020, one day ahead of the professionals who have described the 2020 route as one of the most challenging in the event’s history.

The extreme team event takes place over 3,400 kilometres, comprising 21 gruelling stages during next June and July.

This will be Guy’s first Tour de France ride and he’s excited and daunted by the testing physical challenge ahead, as well as his responsibility in contributing £30,000 to the £1 million fundraising target.

He said: “However hard, tough and deep I have to go to achieve this challenge, it pales into insignificance compared to what the people who will benefit from this go through.

“Nearly everyone has been touched in some way by cancer in their lives.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity to support Cure Leukaemia to positively impact the lives of blood cancer patients across the UK.

“The north west will feel the charity’s impact with its new national focus – for us, the closest new facility will be at the pioneering Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Withington.

“It offers potentially life-saving treatments not currently available through standard care, and to play a part in ensuring these specialist research nurses being available across the UK is a real honour.”

Guy is planning a series of events and initiatives giving a lot of opportunity for people to get behind him and support his fundraising efforts. There are also a number of sponsorship opportunities for those who want to get involved.
