A WIRRAL 29-year-old has been arrested after a man suffered a serious head injury during an attack outside a nightclub in Liverpool city centre.

Emergency services were called to Victoria Street outside Heaven nightclub in the early hours of Sunday, December 8 following reports of an assault.

On arrival, officers discovered a 38-year-old man who was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital before being transferred to Walton Neurological Hospital for treatment for a serious head injury.

It is believed that the victim was on a night out with friends when he was attacked following an argument on the street.

A 29-year-old man from Egremont has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives.

Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and are speaking to businesses in the area in a bid to establish the circumstances around the attack.

Detective inspector Amy Smith, said: “Our investigation into this incident continues and we remain very keen to speak to anyone with any information that could assist our enquiries.

“The investigation is in its early stages and at this time detectives are trying to ascertain the motive for the attack.

"Liverpool city centre was exceptionally busy on Saturday night in the run up to Christmas, and I would urge anyone who was in the Victoria street area at about 2.45am who may have seen the incident, or who has any phone footage or information, which could help us with our inquiries to get in touch."
