HIGH winds overnight have forced the Warrington Christmas Market to close today, Sunday.

The two-day event showcasing the best food, drink, arts and crafts from independent businesses was due to take place around the new Times Square development.

Yesterday's market was very popular but bad weather overnight has 'devastated' many of the market stalls.

The Warrington Market Events Team said: "It is with sincere regret we have had to take the devastating decision to cancel today's Warrington Christmas Market.

"Despite the site being heavily secured over night and with manned security, gusts of up to 40mph have devastated many of our gazebos beyond repair and left the site unsecure and therefore, unsafe.

"The safety of you, our customers and of our traders will always be our absolute priority.

"Apologies for the delay in getting the message out into the open about the cancellation - we are very small team and we had to make getting the site safe and secure this morning our ultimate priority.

"Huge apologies for any disappointment caused, we ourselves are devastated we have had to end our event this way, but we appreciate your understanding and your support."

The indoor market will remain open today, Sunday until 4.30pm.
