PLANS have been announced to improve Prescot Road, including painting a stretch violet in memory of four-year-old hit and run victim Violet-Grace Youens.

A section of Prescot Road was closed last night Tuesday, November 12 from 7pm and will also be closed tonight between Dunriding Lane and Grosvenor Road in the outbound direction from the town centre for road marking alterations.

The two-phase scheme will then continue in a fortnight's time for the installation of two new traffic islands.

Posters such as this have been placed up and down the road

The scheme comes following the death of four-year-old Violet-Grace Youens in March 2017 after she was struck by a stolen speeding car going at 83 mph on Prescot Road.

Her parents Glenn and Becky Youens, as well as raising awareness of organ donation in her memory, have also been keen to raise awareness of speeding, particularly on that street, in her memory.

With this in mind, the council have announced that phase two of the scheme will also include an upgrade to the existing uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point which will be paved the colour violet in memory of Violet-Grace.

No road closures will be required for phase two, although temporary traffic signals will be in place to ensure the safety of workers.
