PLANS have been unveiled to introduce six new 20 mph speed zones across Winsford.

It is part of a four year programme launched by Cheshire West and Chester Council in January 2016 to reduce speed limits, where appropriate, on all residential roads and outside schools.

The schemes include School Green, Wharton, Wharton Park, Over, Winsford town centre and Winsford Meadowbank.

Residents living within the proposed 20 mph speed limits will receive leaflets showing which roads will be included.

Winsford town councillors have welcomed the schemes.

Traffic calming measures such as speed humps will not be included.

Cheshire Police have no objections to the proposal and will enforce the new 20 mph speed limit once all the signs are in place.

The overall budget for 75 identified schemes across Cheshire this year is £200,000. It is estimated that each area will cost between £600 and £3,500.

New figures presented to CWAC's places overview and scrutiny committee show that speed and the overall number of collisions reduced during the first year 20 mph speed limits were introduced in 31 zones in 2017-18.

Average speed did increase in some areas - while councillors and officers expect to have a more reliable picture once it gets the results from 2018-19.

Any comments or objections about the proposals must be made in writing to CWAC by November 15.
