THE Big Lock footbridge could be repaired and reinstalled by next winter, according to a proposal submitted to Cheshire East Council.

The Canal and River Trust, which owns the grade II-listed bridge, has applied for consent for major repairs to the mid-19th century structure.

This would involve the bridge – which has been closed to pedestrians since February – being removed in the new year, before refurbishment takes place in summer and autumn 2020.

With brickwork to be repointed at the same time, this could pave the way for the improved bridge's re-installation in winter 2020.

A planning statement said: "Big Lock footbridge is now in a very poor and deteriorating condition.

"Investigations carried out in March 2019 noted heavy corrosion and evidence of section loss.

"Past movement is evident as there is cracking in both abutments.

"The bridge has been closed to pedestrians due to the concrete deck dropping onto the bracing and the other defects noted above now make it unsafe to remain in use."

The work would also see the approach walls improved, and the concrete deck slab removed from the bridge – which spans the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Cllr Mike Hunter told a Middlewich Town Council meeting on Monday that a temporary crossing could be installed in the meantime, with a separate planning application imminent.
