BURGLARS tried to smash their way into a shop in Winsford.

Intruders attempted to break into McColls on Delamere Street at around 2.45am this morning.

They had damaged the shutter at the front of the store by attempting to force it open.

The offenders had failed to do so and left the scene empty handed.

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses.

The incident is believed to have taken place between 10.30pm on Sunday, September 29 and 2.45am on Monday, September 30.

Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and officers are urging anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything suspicious to get in touch.

They also want to speak to anyone who believes they may have dashcam footage of the offenders.

Detective Constable Mark Sherratt, from Northwich CID, said: “Thankfully, on this occasion the offenders were unsuccessful in their attempts to commit a burglary.

“We want to trace whoever tried to break into the convenience store before they target anywhere else.

“As part of our investigation we want to hear from anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the Delamere Street area of Winsford between 10.30pm on Sunday, September 29 and 2.45am on Monday, September 30.

“The same goes for any motorists who believe they may have captured the offenders on their dashcam. The store is located on a busy road and I believe there could be a number of drivers who drove past the shop and captured the incident on camera. "
