CHESHIRE Fire Cadets have undertaken a 90-mile static bike ride as part of their fundraising mission to build a classroom in Nepal.

The 12-18 year olds from Stockton Heath and Widnes Fire Cadets took on the biking challenge in Golden Square Shopping Centre to fund a charity trip taking place next year.

This will be in aid of Classroom in the Clouds, a charity which supports children's rights to education in Nepal by building schools and supporting teachers and pupils.

Clare Johnson, a cadet leader, said: "There are a few cadets from Stockton Heath, Widnes and Warrington going to Nepal next year with Classroom in the Clouds.

"They are raising funds to build a classroom and it is toilets that the cadets will be building there.

"Each cadet has to raise £3,600.

"It is something that is close to Cheshire Fire Service because of the Nepal earthquake.

"Cheshire Fire and Rescue went out and helped and saw how poor the people were and how much they needed."

The cadets raised £285 thanks to generous members of the public during their biking challenge.

Clare explained: "They did the bike ride from 11am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday and rode from Warrington to Snowdon- some even made it home!

"Some did a lot more than that- one did 175 miles.

"On September 21, similar cadets are walking up Snowdown, kind of like a follow on."

So far, the youngsters have learnt how children in Nepal have to travel great lengths to attend school, if they are fortunate enough to go at all, meaning this new school will be a major addition.

Clare said: "The cadets have been really supportive and I think it's opened their eyes to how lucky they are.

"They are going to Nepal in October 2020 for 16 days.

"They have got to trek to the school and they will help finish it up."
