HUNDREDS of people turned out on Saturday to run a special parkrun in memory of Terry Murphy.

The popular councillor sadly passed away less that two weeks ago while participating in the regular run, which he did every Saturday morning.

And the event did much to commemorate the life of the 79-year-old, who also did much for grassroots football in the town.

Speaking about the parkrun, organisers said: “Today's Northwich parkrun was a tribute to Terry Murphy and almost 500 people took part to remember this lovely man.

“This week 470 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 114 were first timers and 14 recorded new personal bests.

“The event was also made possible by 29 hi-viz heroes, ensuring Terry’s legacy lives on.”

Extra volunteers and medical assistants were drafted in for the parkrun, due to the large numbers who wished to pay their respects to Terry.

Collectors were also dotted around the Carey Park course with buckets, aiming to raise money for a memorial bench in his honour.

And the people of Northwich dug deep with their spare change, ensuring that the bench will now be built.

Parkrun volunteers added: “We are extremely happy to announce that we have raised enough funds to cover the bench, which will be installed in the next few weeks.

“Any additional funds will be sent to the Brothers in Arms and St Luke’s Hospice charities.”

Details have also been released for Terry’s upcoming funeral, which will be held at St Wilfred’s Church on Friday.

This will be followed by a cremation at Vale Royal Crematorium at 1pm.

The public are welcome to attend Winnington Recreation Club afterwards for light refreshments and have been asked to make donations to the two above charities instead of flowers.

These will be collected by George Bell Funeral Services.
