TOWN chiefs want to see as many pillars of the Middlewich community nominated as possible for the role of deputy community mayor.

The new role will give residents the chance to champion one of the town’s true unsung heroes.

They will take on the role of deputy community mayor for the rest of the current municipal year before becoming the town’s community mayor from June 2020.

Cllr Helen Watkinson, Labour member on Middlewich Town Council, said: “There are lots and lots of people in this town that do a lot of good things very quietly, very modestly, and they think to themselves ‘that’s not the sort of thing I should challenge for’.

“But those are exactly the type of people that we want to give this award to.

“Look at all the people that you know at organisations who are working hard – for a long time, for a short time, making a big impact on a lot of people’s lives or a few people’s lives.”

The new Middlewich Town Council introduced the community mayor scheme following May’s election – giving residents the chance to take on the ceremonial role rather than councillors.

Dave Roberts, honorary president of the Mid Cheshire Rail Link campaign, is Middlewich’s first and current community mayor.

Nomination forms for the role of deputy community mayor are available now at the town council offices, in the Victoria Buildings, and online at middlewich.org.uk

They will also be available at Middlewich Library, in Lewin Street, and the Post Office, in Wheelock Street, by Friday.
