THE secretary of the Allostock Gooseberry Show, Jim Hart, once again took top spot at this year’s show on Saturday.

Jim won the heaviest Premier Berry with a Millennium weighing 29 pennyweights 11 grains.

The veteran esteemed grower cleaned up elsewhere, also winning cups for the heaviest twins, the Championship Show Plate, most points gained, and the heaviest plate of Lord Derbys.

Northwich Guardian:

Jim complimented other members who have done very well this year, including Peter Buckles who won cups for the second heaviest Premier Berry and for most points gained in the coloured berry classes. Terry Price won the Jim Ayres rose bowl for the heaviest Firbob Twins.

Peter Riley won the prize for Assorted Plate, which is a new award sponsored by Sheldon’s Dairy Ltd.

Jim said: “It was a successful show for all the members, despite hot and humid weather conditions, thunderstorms, and an unusually large plague of wasps this year, all of which affect the gooseberries adversely.

“A very enjoyable day was had by all, including many friends and guests, some from as far afield as Yorkshire, Wiltshire and Surrey.

“Also visiting was Sylvia, who will be looking after the Gooseberry Collection at the new RHS Bridgwater Garden, Salford, due to open in 2020.”

After the meal, the cups were presented by Janet, The Crown Inn landlady. The members thanked Janet and Simon for hosting the show, and Janet was presented with a bouquet.

The society also thanked the sponsors for their support.
