THE traditional Lymm Rushbearing Festival returns next weekend.
So this week in Yester Years, we have been in our archives to look at images of the event from 1989.
Always held on the Sunday closest to August 12, the event marks the preparations for autumn.
Those taking part in the procession are carrying rushes, the tradition dates back to the Middle Ages when reeds and rushes were put on the floor of buildings to prepare for the winter.
Thelwall Morris Men will be taking on the traditional Rushbearing dance on the occasion to mark its history.
Although the event today looks very different from the 19th century, when it would stop the village and see an attendance of thousands of people/
This year, the procession starts at 4pm in the village, it will follow a short route via the Dingle and re-assemble on the grassy area below St Mary’s Church car park.
There will be Morris dancing and display of garlands. The service will take place in St Mary’s at 4.30pm.
