OVER the past few weeks in Yester Years, we have been telling the stories of life at the American airbase at Burtonwood.
This week, reader Martin Reardon has been in touch.
He recalls being seven when he and twin Tony used to go to the base on Sycamore Lane.
He said: “We went every Friday and took a shoe brush and shoe polish and cleaned the servicemen’s shoes.
“We became quite popular on the base and every so often we would be taken to the PX, which was like a mini supermarket, and had everything you couldn’t get here.
“We were treated to things which were beyond our wildest dreams like Hershy’s bars of chocolate, chewing gum, fruit, pop and I was once given a pair of nylon stockings for my mum.
“Wow, didn’t she give us a big kiss for that.
“They were hard but days but good days.”
