A PASSION for nature has kindled a new business making eco-friendly products for the home.

A Winsford couple loves candles but couldn't find any scents they liked.

Steph Glover and Chris Steers started experimenting with hand poured eco wax candles and came up with a variety of unique blends including black tea and bergamot, orange and coconut and tobacco and vanilla.

"We thought we'd do something different," said Steph, 26. "We did a lot of testing and picked the ones we liked the most.

"Soy wax is more environmentally friendly without any harmful toxins and burns longer than paraffin.

"Our friends said they liked them so we thought we'd give it a go."

The couple have also developed a range of upcycled furniture, all hand made from reclaimed wood.

Items including coffee tables, shelves, coat hooks and various home interior goods such as chopping and charcuterie boards are proving popular, just months after their company website was launched.

"The idea started at the beginning of the year," said Steph. "We'd love to expand and do a wider range of candles."

The pair, who were both pupils at Weaverham High School, went to different universities and met up again several years ago.

The name of their business, Woodspring Company, was inspired by their home in Spring Croft and their love of wood.

All the packaging is biodegradable and the amber jars containing their candles can be re-used as plant pots.

"We're thoroughly enjoying it," said Steph. "It's an absolute dream. We do it all at home but we are looking for a little workshop.

"We're very excited at the minute. We bounce off each other, our ideas are similar.

"We're hoping to develop our upcycled wood products. It is so hard to be original but we are trying."

Three stores, Dafferns in Knutsford, Baile Home in Tarporley and Escape Hair in Nantwich stock their candles and they hope to secure more outlets.

Steph works in retail and hopes to eventually generate enough orders to sustain a full-time job.

Chris, 25, plans to continue working as a freelance videographer, whilst helping to develop the business.

At weekends, they sell their products at makers markets and garden festivals.

"Our main goal is to get stocked in a few more places and get our name established," said Chris. "We try and do things differently.

"We include a thank you card with all our candles, made from recycled paper impregnated with wildflower seeds that people can plant. It's a little surprise gift to make us more memorable."
