WESTBROOK may have some future music stars after two Westbrook schoolgirls excelled in the Young Songwriter competition.
Katrina Tan wrote and sang the song ‘Stars’ alongside her friend Beatrice Hall, who performed the backing vocals.
And after encouragement from their music teacher at Westbrook Old Hall Primary, the 11-year-olds progressed to the last 15 of the national competition.
“I was upset about some things that were happening in school with friends, so I decided to put this it into words and express how I really felt,” said Katrina.
“My older sister was writing songs at my age, so she also inspired me to start writing my own as a way to express my feelings.
“Although I have a passion for music and still want to develop my skills, my goal when I grow up is to become a successful dermatologist.”

Music teacher John Oates also added: “Music is such an amazing, creative outlet and both girls achieved top marks as they come to the end of their time at Westbrook Old Hall Primary.
“Writing a song with structure and a message is a difficult task, and to then record it and make a video is such a great achievement for pupils of their age.
“They definitely have a very special talent.”
Entries into the competition were judged by a panel of professional songwriters, singers, musicians and expert industry professionals.
This year, the judges included Tom Odell and Imelda May.
