AN eight-year-old who raised money for community heart monitors and defibrillators has won an award in memory of the late Eve Shepherd.

The Eve Shepherd Award is given by Bruche Primary School to a student once per term, in memory of the former pupil who died at her home in Padgate in 2015, aged 14.

Mikey Ahmet-Hankin was the latest pupil to receive the honour and it was especially poignant for him as his uncle also died at a young age, just two days after his 18th birthday, from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS).

Mikey has completed nine Big Fun Runs to spread awareness about the condition and has even raised enough money to help protect the community from similar incidents.

His efforts have funded three heart monitors, which have been placed in doctors surgeries, and three defibrillators, one of which is in Warrington and Vale Royal College.

Chris Jones, executive head teacher at the school, said: "It was a really easy decision.

"The Eve Shepherd award means something other than academic achievements and Mikey was a clear choice."
