PLANS to open a new Sainsbury’s store in Woolston have been thrown out by Warrington Borough Council.

A Sainsbury's Local store had been set to replace the Woolston Car Centre on Manchester Road.

But the council’s development management committee refused planning permission for the scheme last week.

Woolston Parish Council and a number of residents had objected to the development.

Concerns had been raised over a potential increase in traffic and the store’s proposed opening hours, as well as parking.

WBC’s highways department had also objected on safety grounds due to servicing, pedestrian access and parking.

And councillors voted to reject the proposals on this basis.

Woolston Car Centre would have moved to a new expanded site on New Cut Lane as part of the scheme, which would have seen part of the existing site demolished and rebuilt.

Changes would have also been made to the shopfront and car park, which would have had 17 parking spaces – fewer than the recommended 26.

The new store would have opened from 7am to 11pm daily, creating 15 full-time equivalent jobs.
