THE M6 was closed this afternoon as a car caught fire after a crash.

Two vehicles were involved in the accident between junction 20 at Lymm and junction 19 at Knutsford shortly before 3pm.

One of these vehicles caught fire, with smoke billowing across the motorway.

Emergency services closed the motorway as Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguish the blaze.

Two lanes reopened at around 3.30pm, but one remained shut until around 4.30pm.

Heavy traffic ihas been reported as a result, with travel times through the affected area peaking at around 45 minutes.
