A FUN-FILLED family fun day attracted more than 1,000 people to celebrate the first birthday of Winsford Town Park.

Crowds enjoyed a feast of music, entertainment, games and activities on Saturday amid a carnival atmosphere.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better day,” said John Malam, chairman of the Friends of Winsford Town Park who organised the event.

“Party in the Park was the first large-scale planned event in Town Park since it opened last year. We hoped the community would support it, and they did!”

The park was transformed into a multi-activity outdoor attraction after a £900,000 makeover last year.

As families basked in the sun, Winsford’s Fancy Feet theatrical dance group staged a choreographed performance, watched by hundreds.

Various local groups and organisations had stalls in the lower park

Various stalls run by local groups including the Salt Sisters, the town's new Women's Institute and Winsford Town Council were were sheltered beneath gazebos in the lower park.

A birthday cake was cut by Winsford Town Cllr Julie Savage and shared by visitors.

Spectators were able to watch salt being made by the Lion Saltworks Trust.

“I’d joked beforehand that the brine might evaporate in the heat of the sun as it was the hottest day of the year," said John. "The team showed how brine was boiled to produce salt crystals. Our visitors quite literally had a taste of Winsford’s heritage.

“We’ve got a park to be proud of and we’ve shown how it can be used for open air events for all ages to enjoy. We’ve learned a lot and we’re already thinking about next year’s Party in the Park which we hope will become an annual Winsford event.”
