TRANMERE Rovers have signed centre back Sid Nelson on a two-year contract following a successful loan period at Prenton Park.

Nelson, who helped the club gain promotion to Sky Bet League One in May, signed the deal this afternoon.

The 23-year-old has made more than 100 professional appearances so far, his last coming in Tranmere's Play-Off final victory against Newport County in May at Wembley Stadium.

"This was the only place I wanted to come and play my football, as soon as I came off the pitch at Wembley I knew where I wanted to play my football.

"There's a great connection between the fans and the players and that’s one thing you enjoy as a footballer.

"I'm looking forward to playing in League One, being competitive and going again."

After working with him last season, Micky Mellon was delighted to sign Sid permanently.

"We know Sid very well from last season and he’s right up there in terms of wanting to improve and giving 100% every time he plays.

"It was important that we recruited in that position and that the players we do recruit are hungry to do well.

"We believe that with Manny (Monthe), Sid (Nelson) and George (Ray) fit into that bracket.

"Having that mix of experience and young, hungry players is important to us."
