PARAMEDICS have rushed to Winchester prison following reports of a 'serious assault' on a prisoner.
Crews were called to the prison in Romsey Road sometime before 3pm, with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance landing in nearby Oram's Arbour at around 3pm.
A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed the air ambulance was not used, with one person travelling to Southampton General Hospital by road.
The spokesman added they were called by the prison "following a serious assault on a patient. The patient was treated at the scene initially before being taken by road to University Hospital Southampton".
The spokesman later clarified that the patient was an inmate.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman added: "We are aware of an assault at HMP Winchester, Romsey Road, this afternoon. Enquiries are ongoing."
The Ministry of Justice has been approached for more details on the incident.
