A WIRRAL based girls football squad finished an impressive third place in an international tournament - but need Globe readers' help.

Oxton Dames, part of Oxton Ladies Football Club, have just come back after starring in a tournament run by SV Nevelo FC in Holland

In order to get there the team had to raise £4,500, so in December, the young footballers completed a fundraising walk up Moel Famau, held a family and friends race night while an aunty of one of the player's Jemma Dixon took part in a 15,000ft skydive in Lancaster.

These fantastic fundraising efforts helped send the super-squad off to Holland to play in the tournament on Saturday, June 8.

The girls did their team and country proud, finishing in an impressive third place.

Club manager for Oxton Dames, Stephen Steele said: "The tournament organiser was Maikel Verhagen and he did an excellent job making sure the tournament ran smoothly.

"It was a great tournament and our girls had a brilliant time and a day they will never forget.

"We played eight games against teams from Holland, Belgium, Germany, France and Ireland. We lost one, drew two and won four, and we finished in an impressive third place! This meant the girls come home with a trophy to show off all their hard work and determination."

Now Oxton Dames are looking for any companies who would like to sponsor them to get in touch so that they can build on their international success.

Stephen added: "This is a great team and a great bunch of girls, all playing the game they love and playing it with a smile on their faces.

"We are a strong U11s team moving up too U12s and we would like to take this opportunity to advertise to any girls who fancy coming along and up for a challenge.

"Also, we are looking for a sponsor so if there are any companies or businesses interested then please get in touch."
