HISTORIC footage of a match between Tranmere Rovers and Liverpool FC from 51 years ago has been unearthed by Wirral Viking expert professor Steve Harding.

Taken during the game on Tuesday, July 30, 1968, which was attended by 13,837, the film was recorded on 8mm cine film by Steve's father Ernie Harding.

The match was held to commemorate the opening of Prenton Park's new main stand which replaced the old wooden pavilion which had served the club for more than half a century.

Rovers fan Steve has released the footage ahead of the two teams meeting once again on July 11 for their annual friendly.

Wirral Globe:

Steve Harding, fan of Tranmere Rovers

Wallasey-born Steve told the Globe: "It was a very friendly occasion – as it is today, and we watched from the terraced Kop.

"In those days fans used to climb up on the Cowshed roof behind the far goal and it was entertaining to see the police play cat and mouse to get them off: this is also captured in the footage.

"Rovers put on a very respectable performance even though we lost 0-3."

Steve claims that Tranmere is the main reason why he got involved with the Vikings and is very proud that it is the only team in the Football League with a Norwegian Viking name.
