A GROUP of travellers will be evicted from a car park in Winsford after the council successfully sought a court order.

Magistrates in Chester heard yesterday that one caravan and two vehicles had illegally occupied the public car park on Church Street, close to a housing estate, for more than a week.

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s gypsy and traveller liaison officer had visited the site on Thursday, June 13 and spoken to the travellers – two adults and four children.

One child was said to be unwell, and the mother wished him to see a health visitor, but apart from that there were no other issues.

They had been ordered to leave but yesterday morning the caravan and vehicles remained on the site.

This left the council with no choice other than to seek a ‘direction to leave’ order, which was granted at Chester Magistrates Court yesterday.

The order, made under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, allows the authority to take ‘reasonable steps to ensure compliance’.

A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council said today: "There is now just one lady left on her own who has moved onto a smaller car park next to the car park on Chester Road.

"Officers have sought another court order and she must leave by 4pm this afternoon."

All the travellers have now left the car park in Winsford, the council confirmed on Monday.

The woman who remained on another car park adhered to the court order and left on Friday.
