IT has been 30 years since Gulliver's World first opened its gates in Warrington and the magic of make-believe is still very much a part of the experience.

The theme park aims to bring families together with rides, attractions and, most recently, a hotel that transports people to far-away worlds, from a land of dinosaurs to the Smugglers Wharf.

Managing director, Julie Dalton, has taken over the running of the site from her dad, Ray Philips, who established it in 1989.

But, for Julie, the main ethos of Gulliver's World has not changed.

She said: "We understand that quality family time is so hard nowadays.

"There’s so much pressure so that time away is really important.

"People are still looking for the same things they did 30 years ago, they want a really great time and the magic of going away has not changed or the look on a child’s face- it’s about creating that magic for a family."

Julie added that her fondest memories of Gulliver's World come from the staff who help to make that magic possible, from those completing work experience to the park's oldest member of staff who is in their 80s.

She explained: "We are very proud of the fact that 95 per cent of our employees are all Warrington people- they are the magic moments that are special.

"A lot of the people in our key roles first started working on the rides.

"We have to invest in the kids of today to be the employees of tomorrow."

The park's dedication to young people has strengthened over the past 30 years with its Star Studios team where youngsters can perform in pantomimes and shows.

Julie said: "I am a firm believer that the most important thing we can give them is that they can say 'I have starred on stage and performed'.

"It’s that ability to go out on the stage and dance without having to take lots of exams."

Another way it has developed this connection is through its Westbrook Big Party, organised by the communities association for WA5 residents.

Julie explained: "There are all sorts of stalls, services and groups.

"It is free but the organisers charge entry that goes directly into community funds.

"It gives a great sense of community in the area which is so great for Warrington because it is expanding so much at the moment."

Julie added: "These 30 years have been an amazing journey and that is what we are still on now."
