JOAN Dean has thanked everyone for their support for a ‘phenomenally’ successful fundraiser staged in memory of her husband.

Members of the Dean family turned out in force in Manchester to take part in a 10k event in memory of former police officer Ron Dean.

Joan, 71, from Knutsford, was one of 13 members of her family who entered the event to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, which supported Ron, who died from cancer, during his illness.

Ron, who died on June 21 last year at the age of 84, was a Knutsford police officer for 30 years before he retired.

The family has raised more than £1,500 for Macmillan by taking part in the 10k, and Joan thanked everyone for their support and donations for Macmillan.

“It was amazing in Manchester; it was packed, with lots of people running for all different causes,” she said.

“Everyone was very supportive and was cheering us on. The people from Macmillan were lovely, and invited us into their marquee and took photos of us.

“The amount we have raised is absolutely phenomenal, and we are hoping to do the event again next year.”

Joan and her daughters-in-law Sharon Dean and Valerie Dean chose to walk the 10k course.

Joan added: “Although I’m not a runner I’m a fast walker! After Ron retired he did gardening, and we enjoyed walking when we travelled all over the country in our motorhome.”

Joan’s eldest grandson was unable to take part in the fundraiser, which took place on the same day as the Great Manchester Run half marathon.

The Deans Go Running justgiving page has raised £1,343, as well as £232 in Gift Aid, and if anyone would like to donate they can visit justgiving.com/fundraising/thedeansgorunning
