AA CARE home has undergone a drastic turnaround according to a health care watchdog after being placed in ‘special measures’ two years ago.

An inspection in 2017 found that Overdene House, in Winsford, was not safe and poorly led.

An inspector said: “Parts of the environment were not always safe. The lift motor room door was left unlocked, and a cupboard containing electricals which displayed hazards signs was also left open.

“This placed people at risk of injury should they access these.”

An inspection the following year noted many improvements but the home was told it needed to maintain the progress over a longer period of time to be rated ‘good’.

After a period of sustained good practice, the care home’s rating has now been upgraded.

The inspector said: “The risks people faced in their lives were fully assessed in order to keep them safe. Robust recruitment and matching procedures were followed for staff. Staff were always visible during our visit to assist people.”

The management at the home, in John Street, was praised in for their approach to care.

The inspector said: “A holistic approach had been followed in the assessing, planning and delivery of people’s care and support.

“Care plans were detailed and person-centred and reflected people’s personal preferences.

“Staff provided care and support that was met in a way people preferred and provided positive outcomes.”

Cath Burns, manager of Overdene House, which is run by HC-One, was delighted with the progress that the home has made.

Cath said: “We are extremely pleased with this outcome and I am very proud of each member of our team as it is a great example of the kind care and hard work that is displayed each day.”

Ruth Yates, HC-One managing director, said: “This rating is wonderful news. I would like to thank the whole team for their commitment and hard work and congratulate them on such an impressive outcome.

“We are dedicated to achieving our aim of being the care provider of choice for those looking for the very best care and support, and employer of choice for the best, most professional, and kindest care staff.”
