RECKLESS vandals have caused extensive damage to Winsford Skate Park.

Yobs have ripped out metal panels from beneath the slopes beside the Lifestyle Centre leaving the space underneath exposed.

Winsford Town Cllr Mike Kennedy suspects older teenagers carried out the attack.

"The panels had been riveted and were very securely fastened so this damage couldn't have been done by young children," he said. "They must have used some sort of tool.

"It is wanton destruction. My concern is that someone could put rubbish underneath it now and set a bonfire."

Cllr Kennedy reported the damage to Chester West and Cheshire Council who have removed all the panels as a remedial measure.

"This skate park has been massively used as a gathering point to talk, chat and play," said Cllr Kennedy. "I've seen up to 40 young people of all ages on skate boards. It has been fantastic to see.

"To destroy something that young people are enjoying is beyond me. It might not be a multi-million pound affair, but it is a well used facility.

"This sort of wanton vandalism will not be tolerated."

The police are appealing for witnesses.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "We aim to keep all of the communal play areas in top quality and condition for everyone to enjoy and the people that are trying to ruin this for others should be challenged and dealt with robustly."
