THE Cheshire police and crime commissioner has been out with officers to warn people of the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving.

David Keane joined officers from the roads and crime unit yesterday Wednesday, April 24 on the lookout for motorists taking a call, texting or scrolling through social media.

David said: “Using a mobile phone while driving is one of the main contributory factors in a fatal collision and drivers using their phone behind the wheel are four times more likely to be involved in a collision.

“But we still continue to see drivers across Cheshire make reckless decisions when they are well aware of the dangers and know they are breaking the law.

“Checking a text message or scrolling through social media is not worth the loss of someone’s life and the heartache that their families suffer from the loss of a loved one.

“It’s important that police and partners work together to make our roads safer and reduce the number of drivers that choose to drive recklessly.”

The commissioner’s observation of the work of the roads and crime unit was part of a two-week mobile phone enforcement campaign by the team as part of the National Police Chief Council’s country-wide campaign.

They have been carrying out enforcement and educational activity using covert vehicles to spot drivers brave enough to flout the law.

Motorists caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel can face a £200 fine and six penalty points on their licence. While drivers under the age of 21, could automatically lose their licence.
