A MIDDLEWICH girl has just been granted a place on Team GB for Weightlifting after beating two national powerlifting records.

Lucy Naden,15, became the new under 16 years of age and under 18 years of age Super Sub Junior British Bench Press record holder, after competing in the national bench-press championships in Newport Pagnell in February this year.

Lucy is still training and she believes she could achieve a new under 18 Commonwealth record before she is 18.

Sean Naden, Lucy’s dad, said: “She has been going the gym for about a year and a half now.

“When she started going the gym I thought her bench was quite high.

“She tried a regional competition and from that qualified for the national championships where she broke the record.

“It’s amazing really she beat the record on her first attempt and then beat it again on her second.

“The national team have been in touch and Lucy we are hoping that she will be going to Tokyo for the World Championships.”

Lucy’s success has happened quickly and her family have had to figure how the competitions operate one step at a time.

Lucy said: “It’s all been a big shock but this is a massive opportunity.

“I am hoping that I can go with Team GB to the world championships and break the commonwealth record.”

Lucy admits that she surprised herself when she discovered her talent for weightlifting.

She said: “I had been going the gym with my dad and we noticed that the weight I was benching was higher than most of the blokes there.

“We checked it against the record and that was lower than what I was benching at the time.”

Lucy says she is confident in her ability and is ambitious, but says the nerves set in before each competition.

She said: “I am always nervous before the competitions but as soon as I have gotten my first lift out of the way in front of the crowd the nerves then start to settle.”
