WITNESSES to a tragic incident near the Northwich railway line on Tuesday morning are being asked to contact the police.

British Transport Police officers raced to the Weaver Railway Viaduct arches near the town centre following reports of a casualty.

Sadly, an unidentified man was found dead at the scene.

Now, officers would like to speak to anyone who may have information on the circumstances of the incident, or was near the arches or Vickersway Park on Tuesday morning.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to the area close to Northwich station at 8.37am on Tuesday morning, March 19, following reports of a casualty on the railway viaduct.

"Paramedics and colleagues from Cheshire Police also attended, however sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are still working to establish the full circumstances behind his death and confirm his identity.

"Detectives would ask anyone who was in the area around Vickersway Park or the nearby viaduct in the hours before and thinks they may have information to get in touch with them.

"They can contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 140 of 19/03/19.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner."

The Mid Cheshire Line between Plumley and Greenbank has reopened on Tuesday afternoon, having been closed to trains while emergency services dealt with the incident.
