A NEW 'bagel shack' has been opened at a primary school in Birchwood.

Pupils at Birchwood CE Primary School will be offered free bagels from the new shack, which was declared open by Warrington Wolves mascot Wolfie on Tuesday, March 5.

The Admirals Road schools teamed up with charities Magic Breakfast and Family Action as well as the National School Breakfast Programme, with funding provided by the Department for Education for the initiative.

A £500 start-up grant helped to buy equipment including a freezer, toaster and cutlery while extra funding helped to build the shack itself.

Headteacher Siobhan Bentley said: "It is our aim to provide every child and family at Birchwood CE Primary School with a healthy, satisfying breakfast before the school day begins.

"We want all children and families at Birchwood CE to be offered a bagel from the Bagel Shack as they enter school, five days a week, absolutely free.

"We feel that enjoying breakfast before school starts will ensure that all children are ready to learn as soon as they enter their classrooms.

"This scheme will be running in addition to our wonderful breakfast club."
