A PENSIONER has been found dead in the Mersey in Howley.

The body of an 80-year-old man was found in the river in the early hours of this morning, Monday.

Officers made the discovery near to Howley Lane at around 5.45am, with the deceased believed to have been reported missing from his home in Padgate at around 8pm last night.

A police helicopter was involved in a search around the Manchester Road and Marsh House Lane areas of town, while a number of residents also assisted with efforts to trace the man.

His death is not believed to be suspicious, and Cheshire Police are now preparing a file for the coroner.

A force spokesman said: “Police searching for the missing 80-year-old in Padgate sadly found a body in water off Howley Lane this morning.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
