RUTTER’s Bridge on the Middlewich branch of the Shropshire Union Canal could be set for repair work after a planning application was submitted to Cheshire East Council.
The application proposes to repair the bridge by reinstating missing brickwork and removing vegetation.
The bridge was constructed between 1827 and 1833 and is a grade two listed structure.
The bridge provides access to fields on both sides for farm vehicles.
A planning statement said: “Given the historic significance of the bridge, consideration has been given to the repair and strengthening proposals to ensure that as much of the original fabric of the structure can be retained.
“The work is also needed to safeguard the listed bridge from further deterioration which may, if left, result in the collapse or loss of the structure.”
